a weekend in rimini
last weekend my girlfriend and i decided to go for a short trip in rimini. it is a town on the famous italian “riviera”, well known because in the past many good movies were done in this part of italy. but even today is still a “chic” place.
we started early in the morning since was a sunny day, to avoid traffic. it wasn’t enough unfortunately thanks to italian very insufficient highway system, we had to wait 3h before arriving there (usually we can drive there without any traffic, in 1h and 30min!).
there was so many people, and the shops were open even if was sunday, as often happens. we stopped by a nearby ice-cream shop to get a ice-cream cup, since we remember that they make very good one, and indeed! was delicious…!
we went a t to the seaside even if was still too cold to swim, but still we engaged with some people in a beach-volley match. in the late evening we came back, because we ran out of money to spend so we decided to go back home and have a dinner in-house, rather than going out in one of those restaurant which serve tasteful fish food…. sigh ;-(
overall though, was a very nice trip and a good way to spend our last sunny sunday.

arxiv: an api for research-grade information
arxiv.org is an online archive of nearly a half million science, math, and computer science research doents.
arxiv.org is an online archive of nearly a half million science, math, and computer science research doents. operated by cornell university, with partial funding from the national science foundation, arxiv now offers an api that provides programmable access to the doents, the goal being to “facilitate new use of the vast body of material on the arxiv.”
[arxiv.org] has be the primary means of communicating manuscripts on current and ongoing research. the arxiv repository is available worldwide. manuscripts are often mitted to the arxiv before they are published by more traditional means. in some cases they may never be mitted or published elsewhere.
see the programmableweb arxiv profile for more details.
the arxiv api uses the rest protocol, returning results in xml. the api is well-doented, with examples of how to use the api in perl, python, ruby, and php provided. the api enables searching within more than 120 different ject categories.
the academic world is highly community-oriented, so it’s no surprise that the arxiv api developers provide users with community resources: a mailing list and an #arxiv chat room at irc.freenode.net.
an ever-increasing stream of reference doents is being made available online. fortunately, with nearly 40 reference apis available, there’s more options to help researchers in finding the exact information they need.

spring fling
the music of spring is so full of nature. spring is not just about flowers blooming, butterflies and rain s. spring is the theme of life after the dead of winter.
so shake winter off and catch the essence of spring! go back in time and think of what reminds you of this season.
in my case, the mood of william shakespeare reminds me of spring. in a humorous and lyrical way he would create and capture the essence of the spring season.
with the emotional change of the beautiful aspects of spring he would emphasize his feelings and fears. shakespeare would imply everything we understand about the seasons of the year in our lives and the phenoa of spring.
it is the effect of what we have seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt internally that brings the spring season to life. so now is your turn to share with us the images of your spring memories.

amazon?s latest web service? a database
amazon web services evangelist jeff barr has been at it again, using twitter to announce the release of his employer's latest offering.
amazon has a long way since its days as a g book shop, and is increasingly making a name for itself as an exemplar of commodity computation.
first we had the simple storage service, s3. little more than a g disk in the cloud, it offered an affordable means by which anyone could make large amounts of data available for download by large numbers of people. second life client downloads from s3, as do talis podcasts. several of my colleagues use s3 for backing up their laptops (i use mozy myself, but that's another story).
then we got the elastic compute cloud, ec2. this commoditised availality of virtual computers, making it relatively straightforward for those experiencing rapid growth - or needing short-term access to additional computing power for some other reason - to call upon additional computers as required, configure them as needed, use them for as long as necessary, and then throw them back into the pool when done.
unsurprisingly, given amazon's e-commerce heritage, a payt service came next. this essentially opened amazon's own e-commerce capalities to third party developers, and allowed them to build it into their own applications. although we knew that this would , i should admit here that the pundits at talis (including myself) were sure that amazon's third web service would be the one they actually only announced today. given our interest in data and their interest in e-commerce, it's perhaps not surprising that we prioritised them differently.
next in the path, a service level agreet. essential, if amazon are to move beyond the early adopters and actually see m market numbers of mainstream enterprises rely upon their web services.
which brings us to today, and the unveiling of amazon simpledb. it had to , and now it has, offering;
“a web service for running queries on structured data in real time. this service works in close conjunction with amazon simple storage service (amazon s3) and amazon elastic compute cloud (amazon ec2), collectively providing the ality to store, process and query data sets in the cloud.”
it's great to see, and in some ways the conceptual use of cloud-based 'content' and 'metadata' is similar to our own ideas around the talis platform... although with very different emphasis and realisation.
and yes, i know i missed sqs and mechanical turk, and various other amazon web services from my story...
