display your feed on a static html page using feedburner s buzzboost
almost every blogger now is using feedburner to publish their feed. the most obvious benefits of using feedburner are the statistics and the scriber count, but there are plenty of other free options that you can use or customize to enhance your blog. one of these options is called buzzboost, and essentially it republishes your feed as html so that it can be used anywhere.
one of the most productive ways to use buzzboost is to publish links to your blog posts from somewhere outside of your blog. in the example that we’ll be looking at here, i to include links to the most recent blog posts from our website’s home page, which is outside of the blog. (see the end result in the image below.)
if you’ve looked around the portfolios of other designers you have probably seen the same thing in action. a growing number of designers are including a blog as a part of their portfolio sites, so it makes sense to promote the most recent posts from the home page. in this tutorial i’ll quickly take you through the process of getting the links from your feed displayed on a static html page.
step 1 - login to feedburner
if you already have a feedburner account set up, login and click on your feed.
step 2 - activate buzzboost
click on the “publicize” tab, and then click on “buzzboost” in the list at the left side of the screen (see image below). at this point buzzboost will give you a number of different options. you can choose how many items (posts) you want to be displayed, if you want the links to open in the same window or a new window, displaying the feed le, displaying the date, and several others. one of the options is “display item content.” if this box is not checked all that will be displayed is the le of the blog post (which is what i will be using), and if that box is checked you can choose to display the entire post or a brief excerpt in plain text or html. for my purposes i have chosen to show 5 posts, have them open in the same window, and everything is left unchecked. once you have everything set the way you want it, click “activate” at the bottom of the page (you can easily change these settings later). if you’ve already activated buzzboost you’ll see the option to save instead of activate.
step 3 - copy and paste the code
once you choose your settings and activate buzzboost you will be provided with the piece of code. copy the code provided by feedburner and paste it into your page wherever you want it to be displayed.
step 4 - customize
now that you have pasted the code into your page, buzzboost should be completely functional. most likely though, you’ll want to make some customizations to the appearance of the output to fit with the rest of your page. fortunately, this is a pretty simple process that can easily be done by editing your style sheet. feedburner/google provides some common buzzboost styling tricks that gives you a good starting point for making your customizations.
in my case, i to put buzzboost into the sidebar of the home page and display the blog posts in a list, very similar to a blog showing a list of recent posts in the sidebar (in this case, the home page is outside of wordpress, so simply using the standard method of displaying recent posts is not possible). i to style the list a little t to get rid of the bullets, change the link colors, set padding and borders, and remove the feedburner image at the end of the list.
earlier i said that i left all of the boxes unchecked in the buzzboost settings, including the option to display the feed le. instead of displaying the feed le i simply inserted a link directly above the buzzboost code that says “from our blog”, which serves as the le. you can do it either way, use buzzboost to include the le, or simply enter it yourself.
feedburner uses divs and cles for everything produced by buzzboost, so it’s pretty simple to style it however you like. the css code that i am using is shown below.
margin-left:0;
padding-left:0;
list-style-type: none;
}
.feedburnerfeedblock ul li {
padding: 5px;
border-bottom-width: 1px;
border-bottom-style: solid;
border-bottom-color: #e0e0e0;
}
.feedburnerfeedblock ul li span.headline a {
color: #990000;
text-decoration: none;
display: block;
}
.feedburnerfeedblock ul li span.headline a:hover {
color: #535353;
}
#creditfooter {
display: none;
}
and this is what the finished product looks like.
possible uses
as you can see from this example, this is a very simple way to display the most recent posts from your blog on another page. in this case the page is on the same ain, but it doesn’t have to be. if you run a few different blogs you could set up a one-page o site that uses buzzboost to display your most recent posts from all of your blogs. additionally, you could use it to put a list of your recent posts from one blog on another blog that you own. for example, i could use buzzboost to show links from this blog at my other blog, traffikd. there are a number of different things you can do with buzzboost, so i hope this tutorial helped to show you how easy and how useful it can be.

something odd happened on the way to mousemove
currently i'm working on a g revision of the events compatility tables. and no the new table is not yet online because i'm not ready yet.
testing event support is really awesomely complicated. i've been working steadily for two weeks now, and i still find new bugs and oddities daily, and twice on sundays.
in any case, i discovered something remarkable when i ied the mousemove event. it sheds light on the way browser vendors keep track of each other's impletations nowadays, and on things that can go wrong.

hunter is watching me on the web
hunter boots finally got it’s act together and updated their website. it’s much nicer now, easier to navigate, better pictures and fast. they’ve even have a spot on their site that aggregates blogs posts, youtube videos and flickr pictures that tion hunter boots. i noticed a bunch of traffic coming from the hunter site and i found out that they linked to me and it was front and center of the main “hunter on the web” section.
the only thing that bugs me about the site is that the store locater is for the uk only. however, the north american distributor is based out of toronto

on blu-ray this week: june 2 to june 8, 2008
kicking off the first week of blu-ray viewing in june (previous week's releases here) is a selection of war, thriller, dy, and drama feature films, dotted with tv series compilations and a few limited edition rehashes for clics.
all 19 blu-ray high definition movies are scheduled to appear on shelves by june 3, 2008, and among the one-and-a-half dozen lined up until june 8 is paul thomas anderson's academy-award winning drama, there will be blood.
paul thomas anderson, who you might remember as one of the directors interested in making the metal gear solid movie happen, tendered his version of life struggles during the californian petroleum oil boom.
while we aren't going to give any spoilers (the movie starring academy award-winning actor daniel day-lewis is best experienced than told), the movie is about oil tycoon daniel plainview and the most significant periods of his life while raising a son during those trying times. we'll put it plainly, though: if you've never experienced the battle of love versus corruption, hope and deception, and amtion and greed, there will be blood is a good piece to start with.
another major le in the midst is cloverfield. in this full feature film occupying a 50 gb blu-ray platter, events turn for the worst for protagonist rob (michael stahl-david) before he could leave his home for japan. threatened by an unforeseen danger, the world rob lives in begins transforming into something other than earthly, and he and his friends must find out what's the cause of it all.
if that doesn't tickle your fancy, then the eye offers something closer to your scare tastes. based off the hong kong film of the same le, the eye recreates the horrendous mysteries behind a blind girl's visions and her actions to achieve the mysteries' resolution.
tamlyn tomita and jessica alba star in this hollywood remake. the eye attempts to tie chinese and american plots together but concludes in a slightly different way some of you'd remember from the original.
not in the mood for fright nights? keeping you on the edge of your seat but not out to give you a heart attack is the spy thriller the recruit. you know the drill: al pacino stars as burke who attempts to get intelligent colin farrell (clayton) into the central intelligence agency. there are unexpected twists when clayton falls for leading woman bridget moynahan, but this time they're re-rendered for 1080p glory.
meet the spartans offers to retell the story of the 300 spartans at thermopylae in a parody blending pop-culture movie hits with what-ifs. what if king leonidas had 13 to fight the persians with? what if the transformers, rocky balboa, and ghost rider joined their cause? meet the spartans, the "unrated pit-of-death edition," takes out a piece of multiple movie hits and gives them a jolly good spin - in .
for history and war buffs, this week is a goldmine. the battle for air supremacy back in 1940 gets re-portrayed in a hollywood production pitting the german luftwaffe against the british royal air force in the battle of britain.
or you could follow the 3rd army's general, george s. patton, through a historical recount of his life in world war ii, from his early days to the the liberation of bastogne (if that's what you'd call it). moving on, the sand pebbles narrates the tale of the uss san pablo during its patrols along the the yangtze river in china, when anti-u.s. hostilities rise to an all time high and endanger the ship and its crew during their mission to save a u.s. missionary.
there are a dozen other les to be had, and you can course through a complete list below:
- cloverfield
- there will be blood
- weeds: season 3
- dirty harry: ultimate collector's edition
- patton
- semi-pro: let's get sweaty edition

your story: applying from outside of the united states
today's story s from an email from jobsblog reader roman, who to share his experience with applying to microsoft from not only outside of the redmond area, but outside of the united states! here's roman's story:
hey there!
been a steady reader for a couple of months now, starting with the first day i heard about a job opportunity at microsoft from a friend of mine.
i to give you some insight on how people from outside redmond (even outside of the us) often consider being accepted for an internship as completely unlikely.
i have a strong background in it and recently wrote a book about a technological topic, but i never considered myself to be ?at microsoft level?. furthermore, here in austria most people don't think there's a chance of being accepted for an internship at the headquarters in the us.
friends of mine encouraged me and forwarded positions and i finally decided to apply for a position as a program manager. it was a true dream of mine, but i just figured it?d never happen since i was located so far away in austria.
but now, four months later, i am looking forward to an exciting summer with my product planner internship at microsoft! my background was strong enough, my interviews went well and i learned that it?s absolutely possible to land a job at microsoft, no matter where you from, given that you are a good fit for the open positions! i never dared to think this could be possible, but here we are.
i just to let everyone, especially the international readers, know that there's always a chance. don't let the distance keep you from applying!
