verizon's d for alltel - implications for sprint?
06/05/2008, 19:50 | JupiterResearch Analyst Weblogs

i heard the concrete rumors yesterday, but this topic has been one that folks have been speculating about for a long time. all morning long, people have been asking me what it means for verizon wireless?

short answer: #1 wireless carrier in the us with 80m scribers. alltel adds 13m to their rising total.

other highlights:
- common network technology and roadmap
- both use brew
- similar arpu though vz has higher data arpu
- fills in coverage gaps in rural areas
- cost synergies - $9b quoted in the press release. always a lot of work to achieve. alltel is stantially smaller than verizon, but is still a very large company.

being smaller, alltel has been nimble and able to roll out new services quickly. they were innovative with their friends/family circle plan being first to market in a category that t-mole has now be famous for. they have a great ui on their new handsets. hopefully, this tradition of innovation with new product rollouts will continue.

i think one of the more interesting questions could be: what does this mean for sprint? do they have enough scale to be cost compeive with the others? it's a question that i don't have the means to answer, but i'm sure some of the financial ysts will be. t-mole benefits from the scale (to a large extent) of their corporate parent in europe though they lack the wired (local, long distance, tv) infrastructure and service offerings of at&t and verizon. verizon's choice of lte will give them a cost advantage. wimax still seems to be sprint's choice alone.

what does this mean more generally for players who aren't either really, really large? or mvno's? mixed models will still work. my grandmother's telco (see blog) that serves a population of several thousand is a profitable eny, but they rent/lease wireless from a larger network operator. rural operators still have a play.

will be interesting to watch.

messin with a guitar sound (will be on my next cd)

allison munn

my music store: http://www.ronaldjenkees.com/music-store **this tune will be on my next cd - i came up with this jam recently so i don't have it available yet. thanks for all the emails and interest in it! can't wait til it's done (hopefully late summer of 2008 - no hard date yet). just havin some fun with a guitar sound on the motif xs8. the patch i'm playing with is called hard ramp as1&2. i made the background beat using fl io. ps. i've read some reviews of this vid as if i'm trying to be a "keytar" player (apparently not a desirable thing, but how can you not like edgar winter's "frankenstein") and that i should just play a real guitar. lol @ some of those same people who probably play guitar hero (nothing against it but hopefully you see my point)! the irony! the point is, folks, if you find a fun/inspiring sound to jam with, by all means, you should jam with it! i don't care if you find a $3.00 plastic trumpet. don't worry about the technicalities and what people say. in the long run it's about the fun that you have making music. thanks for watching!!!

my last day at newsgator was one to remember? first, i couldn?t find my blackberry so i went back home to find it.  of course, i couldn?t? i think one of my kiddos buried it somewhere. i?m still looking for it.  well, when i got back to the newsgator office some of my buddies decided to muck w/ my laptop and my stuff.  my display was rotated 180 degrees and my mouse was switched to leftie style.  and my running shoes were stuffed full of trail mix (found that later).  awesome! bad !  that is what i will miss most about newsgator ? brilliant folks who also like to have fun.  just hilarious and very cool to get messed with right until the end.  i couldn?t have done better myself.

so, i figure the screen rotation thing is a tablet kinda task and nick harris is a former tablet guy… busted. and i got touchdown td pegged for the shoe goodness.  there are several others on the short list of suspects… awesome folks who i will miss g time!

on friday evening i had a going away party at a really nice restaurant in downtown denver.  i was n away with how everyone was so psyched about my new endeavor; the well wishes felt great! greg and i joked that on monday everyone would be calling me out as a dumb for leaving such a great place.  okay, there may be some truth to that allison munn i also got to chat with greg about early days of newsgator (fund raising, office hunting, and other crazy startup stuff) - took away some solid advice.

what a great way to leave a great company!

i?m coming over to eran and others? point that 1) it?s too early to standardize and 2) it probably isn?t necessary anyway. go ahead, let a thousand flowers bloom.

….

…..propaganda needs to be free to be effective. in other words, you?re not going to convince people of your way of thinking if you lock down what you have, especially if what you have is culture, a mindset or some other philosophical approach that helps people narrow down what consutes right and wrong.

look, if martin luther had nailed his ninety-five theses to the door but had ensconced them in drm, he would not have been as effective at bringing about the reformation.

likewise, the future of the social web will not be built on proprietary, closed-source protocols and standards. therefore, it should as no surprise that google wants opensocial to be an ?open standard? and facebook wants to be the openemest of them all!

….

that facebook is attempting to open source it platform, to me, sounds like offering the world a different rail gauge specification for building train tracks.

right on brother!

allison munnchris brings up joeseph smarr’s post and presentation on opensocial, openid, oauth from google i/o.  clearly plaxo has their own version of the world- which supports open standards and proprietary ones - as well. i wonder if they’ll open source their platform?  joseph fights the right fight for all of us - you gotta love him for that. the fact that plaxo is now owned by comcast just makes this all the more perverse.

i really like joseph and i respect chris and his diso project - which some folks are starting to use.  i also really agree that chaos and ran events is the strategy which will form the open mesh.  there will not be one way, there will not be just open standards, but a hodge podge of everything.

guys like chris and i may want open standards, but those take time to evolve. in the meantime (even though michael arrington thinks it’s compromising) i believe we have to work with all these proprietary standards - to at least deliver compelling experiences to our customers.

chris’ musing over the future of the social web clearly point out that we’re gonna have platform wars, whether we like it or not.  now the question is - how can we have our cake and eat it too?

which beings me to steve gillmor’s plan b post, which deserves it’s own response post.  hopefully i’ll find time for that - today.

now the silverlight juggernaut comces

and the benefits of the live contacts alliance start to appear.  you can now connect live messenger to facebook chat.  so the borg has meshed with facebook.  united against the googlers of mountain view.  the wars continue.

i sure hope that the future of social computing is more than content spewing.  but you gotta love those spewers.  i can see the t-shirt now “spewers r us” - or at least the hugh cartoon.  stowe inclinates social tv - i sure as hope it’ll be interactive and understand who my friends are and where i am.

pete cashmore is considering doing the ‘loic-thing’ and moving here to the bay area to be part of the insider’s game.  sure pete - why not?  can’t hurt - right?  you could always move back - or move somewhere else.

twitter won’t be the next friendster - simply because they’re starting to listen and fess up. friendster never did that.  but they could be the next netscape.

what!  adobe/macromedia having troubles with their web software?  no!  it can’t be!

flock is becoming more and more a dla (digital lifestyle aggregator.)  hmmmmmm
