the centers for medicare & medicaid services (cms) has announced the contract suppliers for the first round of the medicare durable medical equipt, prosthetics, ortics, and supplies (dmepos) compeive dding program. the compeive dding program will offer beneficiaries in the designated compeive dding areas (cbas) access to quality dmepos products and services with lower out-of-pocket costs. as a result of the compeive dding process, the amounts that medicare will pay for the 10 product categories included in round 1 of the dmepos compeive dding program overall average 26% less than medicare?s previous payt amounts. savings for beneficiary out-of-pocket cost and medicare range from 14% on negative pressure wound therapy devices and accessories up to as much as 43% on mail order diabetic supplies. beneficiaries in these cbas will begin seeing these savings on july 1, 2008.

the tft screen has a resolution of 480×234. it can display jpeg, tmaps and features a slideshow function. the frame is also usable as a calendar, clock and alarm clock. motion jpeg, mp3, wma and wmv files are supported.

2 things stand out regarding the new po frame princeton technology [jp] unveiled today: the unusual shape and the low price. the ppf-ovo is designed like an egg (61×61×81mm, 158g) and will set you back only $38.

the device features a usb port and 2 gb of internal memory. its screen is just 1.5 inches wide (128×128 resolution) and can display jpeg and bmp files.

verizon wireless (nyse: vz), the second-largest u.s. carrier, is reportedly in talks to buy no. 5 alltel (nyse: at) communications for $27 llion, according to cnbc, which cited unnamed sources. spokespeople at verizon and alltel declined to comt on the news, reported ap. together, the two companies would easily surp at&t, the largest u.s. carrier. little rock, ark.-based alltel became a privately held company, after it was bought out by tpg capital and gs capital partners in november for $24.7 llion. considered a regional carrier, it covers parts of 35 states in the middle of the u.s. and has more than 13 million customers. together, verizon wireless and alltel would have 80.2 million scribers, surping at&t's 71.4 million customer base.

of course, the acquisition makes sense. verizon wireless and alltel use the same network technology called cdma, but perhaps, verizon would face regulatory hurdles given that the number of wireless operators has shrunk considerably in the last few years. one thing for sure is that it could be a to many mole developers and third-party companies that rely on the smaller operators to be more risky and try out new services before g behemoths like verizon and at&t (nyse: t). 

update: vodafone (nyse: vod), which has a 45 percent stake in verizon, confirmed today that the us's second largest carrier is in talks with alltel to buy the rural carrier for $27 llion, reports reuters.

over the years, i've had a number of conversations with friends concerned about how disposable (and wasteful) technology has be. case in point -- the new printer i bought for less than the price of ink cartridges.

until last week, i had three printers -- a fairly modern hp all-in-one unit, a brother laser printer and my old hp all-in-one, a g95.

the first two we shipped, since we use them routinely, and they'll work in the us just fine. the g95 i figured we'd use until we moved for the odd print job or copying we might need.

unfortunately, i failed to check if the mac supported it. mac running leopard does not. oh, hp will lie to you and say that gutenprint makes it work. i bet no one from hp has actually tried it. i know that many report the same issue i had. it would send the print job out but nothing would back.

annoying. i couldn't believe i'd need to buy a new printer with weeks to go here. but, i did need to print something. so, i started checking prices.

we've got some important news here for all the strong bad fans out in qj land. we've just learned that strong bad's cool game for attractive people (wii, pc)has had its release date pushed back a t  to july.

telltale games' blog has the news for us:

first things first, now that the calendar has turned to june, we know you're eager to find out when you get to play homestar ruiner, the first episode of strong bad's cool game for attractive people. to that we say... in july. we're taking a little extra time to make the game as awesome as humanly possible. (we know you wouldn't want it any other way!).

on the bright side, their blog post indicated a simultaneous release of sbcg4ap on the wii and pc platforms, which is certainly good news. now, they haven't actually tioned a specific release date or pricing platform for the game, but you can bet that we'll be there to report it when they tion it.

a man in singapore (where else) has been banned from owning a camera phone for a year after being caught secretly filming a woman in an airport bathroom. actually, "secretly" is probably a strong word when you consider that the perp, 19-year-old samuel ong, simply slid his camera phone under the cucle door to catch a few ss.

not surprisingly, the woman caught ong in the act and reported him to the police. in addition to the cellphone ban, he will have to complete 60 hours of community service, undergo psychiatric treatt and observe a curfew as part of his sentence. seems like he is getting off pretty easy, especially by singaporean standards.[reuters]

google inc.'s chief executive, eric schmidt, sees a future where mole phones are free to consumers who accept watching targeted forms of advertising.

schmidt acknowledged that mole phones may never be totally free to the consumer. newspapers are still not completely free a hundred years after they started relying on advertising, but they certainly are inexpensive, he noted.
