verizon's d for alltel - implications for sprint?
06/05/2008, 19:50 | JupiterResearch Analyst Weblogs

i heard the concrete rumors yesterday, but this topic has been one that folks have been speculating about for a long time. all morning long, people have been asking me what it means for verizon wireless?

short answer: #1 wireless carrier in the us with 80m scribers. alltel adds 13m to their rising total.

other highlights:
- common network technology and roadmap
- both use brew
- similar arpu though vz has higher data arpu
- fills in coverage gaps in rural areas
- cost synergies - $9b quoted in the press release. always a lot of work to achieve. alltel is stantially smaller than verizon, but is still a very large company.

being smaller, alltel has been nimble and able to roll out new services quickly. they were innovative with their friends/family circle plan being first to market in a category that t-mole has now be famous for. they have a great ui on their new handsets. hopefully, this tradition of innovation with new product rollouts will continue.

i think one of the more interesting questions could be: what does this mean for sprint? do they have enough scale to be cost compeive with the others? it's a question that i don't have the means to answer, but i'm sure some of the financial ysts will be. t-mole benefits from the scale (to a large extent) of their corporate parent in europe though they lack the wired (local, long distance, tv) infrastructure and service offerings of at&t and verizon. verizon's choice of lte will give them a cost advantage. wimax still seems to be sprint's choice alone.

what does this mean more generally for players who aren't either really, really large? or mvno's? mixed models will still work. my grandmother's telco (see blog) that serves a population of several thousand is a profitable eny, but they rent/lease wireless from a larger network operator. rural operators still have a play.

will be interesting to watch.

sprint's airave signal booster in the wild, on sale nationwide this month?

considering that the last time sprint's airave was even relevant was when a smattering of folks bought one in denver and indianapolis, like, last september, here's a quick refresher on what this thing does. similar to t-mole @home, this box plugs into one's broadband connection and essentially acts as a mini cell tower within your house, which will certainly make folks in a fringe zone with no option for roam only (feel our pain, instinct owners?) quite happy. for whatever reason, the carrier has dilly-dallied around with this thing forever, and even if whispers prove true and it launches on july 15th for $99 (on top of a monthly fee for unlimited minutes, we hear), we have to wonder if anyone will even te. two more ss in the read link.

the german & iraqi villages of england's salisbury plain

i've written before about how the british army trains on the fields around our house, flying g c-130s overhead and operates two fake villages (one "german" and one "iraqi") for further training. well, the troops have been busy. flights keep going over head during the day and night, very low and very exciting. last night, i grabbed my oldest son (since he can stay up late, you know), and we jumped into the mini to chase down one of the planes landing nearby, plus so i could finally grab some pics of those villages. below, some videos and still ss.

should organizations get to ignore copyright for the sake of preservation?
07/19/2008, 04:21 | Techdirt

copyright was clearly designed for a different age: when not everyone was a "publisher." and while we've spent years pointing out many of the different problems that has caused, here's another one: how is a library or some other insution charged with "archiving" written works for posterity supposed to deal with copyright laws that can often make such archival activities against the law? well, the library of congress and a bunch of other organizations have a suggestion: let them all ignore copyright law for the sake of archiving. basically, the report recomds that certain organizations be designated as "preservation insutions," which are then more or less allowed to ignore copyright law and copy-at-will for the sake of preservation. of course, this is clearly going to lead to many questions, including just who would get designated as such. many people can probably agree on public libraries and such -- but what about google? after all, google is already one of the largest players in "preserving" what's online and also, with its book scanning project, what's in books. yet it's a private, for-profit company. should it qualify? i would argue that it makes sense to allow it, given how beneficial the archival activities of google have already been. even if it is for profit, the public benefit has been tredous as well. but then what's to stop any other company from arguing that it to deserves an exemption for preservation purposes? wouldn't a better solution be to start rethinking copyright law altogether, since what has be clear from this is that copyright doesn't quite fit today's world any more?
