yahoo inc and microsoft corp ended months of deal talks on thursday as the web pioneer agreed to let archrival google inc sell search ads on its site, the companies said.

separate statets from microsoft and yahoo signaled a real rift between the two after their agonizing on-again, off-again talks, and yahoo shares fell 10 per cent as final hopes of a full or partial acquisition faded for many.

microsoft shares rose more than 4 percent as investors showed relief that the company would not be paying too high a price for a deal they considered risky ? and even though it faces the joining of forces of its ggest rivals on the web.

google desktop is a desktop search application that runs on windows, mac, and linux. but the linux version has always been a t behind the curve. while all three clients let you search the web or files on your computer, the mac and windows versions have long supported google gadgets, which are desktop widgets that let you do everything from checking the weather to controlling your media player software.

now google has released an update that brings gadgets to google desktop for linux. installation is kind of a pain at the mot, since there's no .deb or .rpm package. you need to download the source code and compile the application yourself, which often means finding out that you don't have all of the necessary prerequisites installed on your system.

fortunately google offers a "how to build" page which lists all of the prerequisites. but if you read the comts on that page, you'll notice that dozens of people have complained about their inality to install the application properly. so you might want to wait until google simplifies the install process.

google has rolled out an enhancet to its popular web-based e-mail service. the new gmail labs lets users test drive additional features before they make their way to the public version of the service.

if you use google's adsense program to earn money from your website, you could be missing out on additional in by not replacing unpaid psa ads.
many online ad programs, including adsense, will sometimes show default ads, or public service announcet (psa) ads, when they have no paying ads to show. this can happen for many reasons, especially when their spiders crawl your pages for content.

what many webmasters do not realize, however, is that you can easily replace those unpaid ads and earn bonus revenue from your website. all you need to do is make a simple change to your ad codes.in the case of google's adsense program, this is done by adding an alternate url to your code. it is a very simple process that will typically take you less than five minutes. using the adsense online wizard, you simply add an alternate ad url to your code, then copy and paste the new code into your pages.

judging from online forum posts on the ject, as well as considering the incredible number of sites that do not use alternate ads, it appears that many webmasters believe google or other ad networks will punish you for replacing their defaults ads. this is of course ridiculous. why would they give you the tools and instructions on how to do this if they were going to penalize you? now that you know how to earn extra revenue from your site, the challenge for many webmasters is how to make a "url" actually appear as an ad. it's really not that difficult, and there are a couple of ways to go about it.

one new program that was recently created to address this issue is alternateurl.com, where you can create an alternate url ad in just a few easy steps in any of the standard adsense supported sizes to your ad code.

as first rumored yesterday, verizon (nyse: vz) is acquiring alltel (nyse: at) equity and debt in a transaction worth $28.1 llion. release.

verizon wireless issued a press release just mots ago, detailing the transaction between itself and it's minority owner vodafone (nyse: vod) and alltel, which once completed will make it the largest u.s. wireless operator. verizon will purchase alltel from private-equity partners tpg capital and gs capital partners, for about $5.9 llion in cash and will ume alltel's debt, which is estimated to be $22.2 llion, making the total transaction value $28.1 llion. the deal is expected to close by the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals. rumors of the merger cropped up yesterday, however, the timing of the deal is surprising. alltel was always a potential buy-out candidate for verizon because they used the same network technology, but why now? one might suspect that verizon was increasingly resigned to the fact that it was never going to catch-up to at&t (nyse: t), which has a runaway hit in selling apple's (nsdq: aapl) iphone. together, verizon wireless and alltel will have 80.2 million scribers, surping at&t's 71.4 million customer base.

verizon wireless and alltel both use cdma, which will make integrating the two companies' networks easier, and more efficient. it was earlier this year that at&t comted on how smoothly the merger between cingular and at&t wireless went because they shared a common technology called gsm. likewise, critics have been harsh and quick to point out that the merger between sprint (nyse: s) and nextel communications failed because the two companies didn't share a common technology.

verizon said once the deal closes, customers at both companies will have access to more products and services. verizon said it expects to expand the in-network calling to the comned customer base. it will also offer alltel customers advanced services, such as over-the-air downloadable music and a nationwide network since today alltel only operates in 57 primarily rural markets. alltel will also join verizon's 4th-generation path to lte, and participate in its open developt initiative.
