usoft, one of the larger video gaming companies out there, has a somewhat troubled history of overburdening its games with awful drm. and, as with most drm systems, the people it tends to hurt most are the legitimate purchasers who somehow run afoul of whatever drm rules are in place. in this case, the usoft game rainbow six: vegas2 (r6v2) had some drm that would check to see if the physical media (cd-rom) was in the drive before it would let you play. unfortunately, usoft also offered the game as a download via ign's direct2drive store. they had set it up so this would work even without the actual cd, but a recent patch didn't take that into account, and broke the game for anyone who had purchased it via d2d.

so, what does usoft do? it releases a patch that isn't actually a "patch" but a well known crack that it downloaded off the internet. as torrentfreak points out at the link, according to the way companies like usoft look at things, it "stole" someone else's code and ped it off as its own. and, of course, there's the somewhat delicious irony that it didn't just "steal" any code for its own use, but the very code that companies like usoft insist is evil, imm and illegal. except, of course, when usoft is in desperate need of it, apparently.

there has been some confusion lately about the migration process to get access to ginger. some of you did receive their invitation code very quickly but had to wait several hours to be actually migrated.

we are really sorry about this but since a lot of you asked to be migrated we had to set up a queue in order to not overload the databases and the servers. at the mot the queue is decreasing and you should receive your access to ginger in less than 24 hours.

it looks like we won't have to wait long until before cboomf and felix123 add more features to their steadily improving wii web server homebrew. the developers have recently announced the release of wii web server alpha v0.30, which will now carry support for the wiimote controller.

as a recap for the guys who weren't here during the previous releases: this homebrew is basically a web server built to work with the nintendo wii console. it's still in the early stages of developt, and currently displays a test page only. here's the lowdown on its most recent updates:

• added wiimote support
• added image support
• added /img image test link
• alpha v0.24b
• bug fixes for 0.24a
• //a is now back to /a, but //quit is still there for other reasons
  

as with the previous releases wii web server releases, version 0.30 does not include a readme. there is one available over at the developer's site (via the source link below) - we advise the readers visit that for further details how to install and use this homebrew.

google inc.'s chief executive, eric schmidt, sees a future where mole phones are free to consumers who accept watching targeted forms of advertising.

the national retail federation has just released its 2008 survey on the impact of organized retail crime (orc) on u.s. merchants. nrf reported that 85% of retailers (out of 114 merchants responding) reported that they’d been the victim of orc. that number is up 6% vs the prior year, although the number of firms reporting an increase in orc activity vs. the prior year was down slightly.

while the impact of orc is at core a multi-channel issue and concern, it’s worth noting again how fraud, like commerce, is evolving into a multi-channel vehicle. the report reinforces the role online auction and for-sale sites have (along with traditional channels, like pawn shops and swap meets among others) as ways to reintroduce stolen goods back into the supply chain. steal at the pos, then list the goods online for resale...it also highlights retailer views on the topic, and select legislative and law-enforcet-partnerships as ongoing efforts to address. given consumers' trust issues regarding the safety of their data online, efforts to increase trust from both angles (through education and efforts to increase data security, and through efforts to reduce the amount of stolen goods that are fenced online) offer important, overlapping strategies through which "trust" can be increased.
