spike jonze's where the wild things are might be in trouble.
spike jonze's where the wild things are might be in trouble. it was originally due out in october, got pushed back to fall 2009, and has now been taken off of warner bros. release schedule. but not all is lost...here's what warner had to say about it:
(link)we've given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film," horn said. "we'd like to find a common ground that represents spike's vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. we obviously still have a challenge on our hands. but i wouldn't call it a problem, simply a challenge. no one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized io movie. this is a very special piece of material and we're just trying to get it right.

apple's walled garden
so far i have no interest in iphone apps, and i haven't bought an iphone 3g, though i have upgraded to iphone 2.0. i never unbricked my phone, and i still think of iphone apps as web apps, just like steve told me to in the early days when i an api and an sdk. i got in the hat of thinking of it as a phone and nothing more.
the address book still works, and the phone, and that's about all that i care about. i carry a huge powermac with me when i travel, but i'd consider replacing it. developers tell me that soon, in an upcoming software update the opml editor, which i depend on for all my work, will break unless we get cracking on it. that's so apple. as a developer you have to keep spending money just to stay in place.
somehow for some reason buying into the apple culture has been something i've resisted, where some people embrace. i won't wait in a line, or oooh and ahhh at a stevenote. i just don't like the smarmy marketing atude of apple, he's kind of like the teacher's pet in music cl, pretending that he's a connoisseur -- i see flaws and bugs everywhere. fix the bugs and stfu about how great the product is. sorry. i want to use apple's products the same way i use a canon camera, as a product i respect, but if they ever start screwing around the way apple does, i'd switch to a nikon or whatever. problem is there is no nikon or whatever in pcs and ipods. all the other products . hugely. apple's just a t less. not a huge accomplisht for an industry, imho.
anyway, over the years i've got to watch platforms that work and ones that don't. the ones that work usually only work for a short while, then something happens that screws it up.
in order for a platform to work, the owner of the platform has to be a provider; the developers compete to create wonders for the platform. after all these years the platform as chinese household model still seems the right one to me. developers make baes. the husband (the vendor) provides the house, food, and pays the utility lls. in steve jobs's apple, it's all screwy. the vendor makes the baes and the developers make little cupcakes they can sell to people who to admire the baes. a lot of people love the baes, so in theory it's possible to make good money selling cupcakes.
but starting and running a cupcake stand isn't really what gets most developers up in the morning.
all i can say is that nik is right, it's ridiculous, and people who believe in open systems who bet heavy on such a closed system are going to learn again why they love open systems.
btw, this is why i have a blog, so i can write pieces like this. i'm not running for office. don't vote for me!

touhou fangame beta 1 - insane shooter action on nintendo wii
homebrew developer squidman posted up an action, scrolling shooter project for wii homebrew just a couple of days ago on wiibrew, and it seems to have promise. touhou fangame beta 1 is not complete, however, and may lack the appearance of the look and feel that touhou fans have to love.
for this reason, touhou fangame is rendered a generic, homebrewed danmaku shooter for the wii now.
most of its ets were borrowed from sources on the internet, but it's entirely a 'ground-up' remake with code licensed to the general public. squidman plans to recreate touhou project on the wii faithfully to how zun produced the original doujin software: this is entirely a one-man project.
that didn't wouldn't the developer from asking for some fan-made content, however, so if we're reaching any budding or experienced artists here, let's lend a helping hand, shall we? the game only employs basic controls that you may find in the bundled doentation. source and homebrew channel-compatible build archive follows in the download below. enjoy!

amazon?s latest web service? a database
amazon web services evangelist jeff barr has been at it again, using twitter to announce the release of his employer's latest offering.
amazon has a long way since its days as a g book shop, and is increasingly making a name for itself as an exemplar of commodity computation.
first we had the simple storage service, s3. little more than a g disk in the cloud, it offered an affordable means by which anyone could make large amounts of data available for download by large numbers of people. second life client downloads from s3, as do talis podcasts. several of my colleagues use s3 for backing up their laptops (i use mozy myself, but that's another story).
then we got the elastic compute cloud, ec2. this commoditised availality of virtual computers, making it relatively straightforward for those experiencing rapid growth - or needing short-term access to additional computing power for some other reason - to call upon additional computers as required, configure them as needed, use them for as long as necessary, and then throw them back into the pool when done.
unsurprisingly, given amazon's e-commerce heritage, a payt service came next. this essentially opened amazon's own e-commerce capalities to third party developers, and allowed them to build it into their own applications. although we knew that this would , i should admit here that the pundits at talis (including myself) were sure that amazon's third web service would be the one they actually only announced today. given our interest in data and their interest in e-commerce, it's perhaps not surprising that we prioritised them differently.
next in the path, a service level agreet. essential, if amazon are to move beyond the early adopters and actually see m market numbers of mainstream enterprises rely upon their web services.
which brings us to today, and the unveiling of amazon simpledb. it had to , and now it has, offering;
“a web service for running queries on structured data in real time. this service works in close conjunction with amazon simple storage service (amazon s3) and amazon elastic compute cloud (amazon ec2), collectively providing the ality to store, process and query data sets in the cloud.”
it's great to see, and in some ways the conceptual use of cloud-based 'content' and 'metadata' is similar to our own ideas around the talis platform... although with very different emphasis and realisation.
and yes, i know i missed sqs and mechanical turk, and various other amazon web services from my story...
