i got my online version of the asrnews and was interested to read about two cable giants: charter and comcast, and the fact that asrnews tested their ivrs and found that the data customers feed in to the system is not used for cti screen-pop purposes. basically, charter and comcast are using their ivrs merely to annoy customers at the front end.
said the newsletter, "this month we tested charter communications. no cti. they gather id information from the caller and then throw it away. comcast does the same thing. these folks should either implet cti of get rid of their ivr that is doing nothing other than irritating callers."

more high-quality customer service from the cable companies. how could it get any worse? they play a eardrum-shattering screech tone into customers' ears as payback for daring to try and get in touch with customer service?

speaking of unencrypted data, letters are being sent around to at&t managers alerting them that someone managed to skulk off with an unencrypted company laptop in tow.
according to the letter, the laptop was stolen on may 15th from an employee’s vehicle. it had an unencrypted file containing names, social security numbers, and salary information for “a number of at&t managet employees.” no location was disclosed, as at&t does “not want to potentially notify the thief of the nature of the data on the hard-drive.”
although the data wasn’t encrypted, the laptop was pword protected. best case, the theft was just a smash-and-grab by someone who plans to dump the drive and resell it. there is no evidence yet that the information has been compromised - not that that relieves any stress for the victims. unless the laptop is recovered, there’s no way to be sure that problems won’t spring up months or years from now.
hopefully this serves as a wake up call to any companies out there not keeping a strict eye on these sorts of things (read: it won’t). it takes all of a few minutes per system to get filevault or tlocker or truecrypt up and running. how much time will be spent dealing with police reports and credit agencies over this?

microsoft may be cutting off windows xp sales on june 30th, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to walk into a store and pick up a pc running the venerable operating system over the july 4th holiday weekend. that's because there are a whole bunch of loopholes in the cutoff date. pc world has a rundown, but here's an overview: - if you're a pc maker with a bunch of windows xp licenses lying around, nobody's going to stop you from putting them on any computers you sell from now to eternity
- if you're a pc maker selling computers with windows vista business or ultimate, you can offer customers a "downgrade" option
- microsoft has made an exception through 2010 for pc makers selling low cost desktops and laptops meeting strict requirets (the hard drives can't be too large, the processor's can't be too fast, etc.)
but we're going to ume that a whole lot of people aren't paying much attention to the deadline and will wind up downloading bootleg copies of windows xp if they need to reinstall their pc operating system sometime this fall.read | permalink | email this | comts
