like a zippo [cnc]
yesterday while reading my daily techmeme i saw this headline:
the first thing i thought was “wow! are they really releasing the nokia remade?”
actually no, the new nokias are just pretty neat handhelds, but nothing along the line that cradletocradle authors would endorse, apparently.
for those who are wondering, the “remade” project is (as nicholas defines it):
a provocation for serious conversations at the tippy-top of the nokia enterprise to seriously consider how upcycling can be part of the design, construction and consumption of mole phones. materialized ideas on a really impactful concept.
as jan chipchase, researcher for nokia design, puts it on his blog:
sustainality is a pressing issue in a llion+ products-per-year industry
while talking in the office with tom, who met jan and had the chance to play a t with the remade, and listening to his description of the experience, i thought that, apart from the upcycled materials, the remade gives the feeling of an undying object, something that is there to stay, like a zippo lighter.
even if i don’t smoke but i’ve always been in love with zippo lighters: they’re solid, their design is always contemporary, not too loud (well, at least the clic model) nor too dull, and when you have one in your hands you can’t help but play with it, in your own personal way: whether to try and light it in one clean swoop, or just spin it through the fingertips, or compulsively open and shut it to hear that distinctive, reuring “clack” sound.
i’m definitely looking forward to devices like these.

official price for sprint instinct announced
sprint will match apple’s iphone 3g pricing with a similar $199.99 pricing (after rebate and a 2-year contract) for the samsung instinct. sprint is put in a corner with the cheap iphone price, which now has 3g and gps like instinct.
the iphone/ instinct rivalry has also been made official by walter mossberg, who reviewed the instinct today at the wsj. it’s perhaps important to note that though mossberg wasn’t too impressed with the instinct as an “iphone clone,” he did point out that the removable battery might bring some customers to sprint instead of at&t. voice command and mole tv are also strong points for the instinct. anyone thinks instinct has a chance?
this is a post from cell phones etc. enled:

something odd happened on the way to mousemove
currently i'm working on a g revision of the events compatility tables. and no the new table is not yet online because i'm not ready yet.
testing event support is really awesomely complicated. i've been working steadily for two weeks now, and i still find new bugs and oddities daily, and twice on sundays.
in any case, i discovered something remarkable when i ied the mousemove event. it sheds light on the way browser vendors keep track of each other's impletations nowadays, and on things that can go wrong.

solar system a t squashed, not nicely round
clipper's remarks: "imagine a balloon is being n up by the solar wind. you might imagine that if you took a balloon, which is mainly spherical, and pushed it against the wall, it would be blunted on one side," said edward stone of the california insute of technology, one of the scientists involved in the research.

launched in 1977, the voyager 1 and voyager 2 unmanned probes are now ying the edges of the heliosphere, the huge magnetic "bubble" around our solar system created by the solar wind as it runs up against the thin gas in interstellar space.
voyager 2 in august 2007 crossed this boundary 7.8 llion miles from the sun.
voyager 1 had crossed the boundary in december 2004 about 10 llion miles away from voyager 1 and almost a llion miles her from the sun.
scientists think this indicates that the bubble carved into interstellar space by the heliosphere, which extends well past the distant ort of pluto, is not perfectly round, and the solar system is shaped a t like an oblong.
