so this uber smart dude zodttd, has done something pretty sweet.

he has successfully ported the popular vlc media player over to the iphone. yes, the iphone.

soon it will play flac and ogg and he's checking out how to build support for vcd, divx, wma, and wmv.

one question though, why aren't these formats already supported by apple? aren't we all tired of the format wars at this point? if you pay $400 or more for a device, shouldn't you get a say in what plays on it and what doesn't?

over the past couple months, we've pointed to the misuses of technology to enforce traffic laws, particularly red light cameras which often end up causing more accidents or allow municipalities to decrease the yellow light time and increase ticket revenue. last fall we noted the case of a teenager who was challenging another technological traffic enforcet: radar guns -- and he was using a different technology to do so: his gps system. now, the 18-year old driver has successfully contested that speeding ticket which he was issued for allegedly traveling 62 mph in a 45 mph zone.

luckily for the teen, his car had an advanced gps system which not only provided directions but measured velocity to "within 1 mph." after receiving a trial and bringing a gps expert to testify to the accuracy of the device, the $190 ticket has been dismissed. what is not clear is why the police officer's radar gun output was more than 1/3 inflated (though this is hardly an isolated incident). also, as a number of people have pointed out, similar gps data, if widespread, could also to serve as critical evidence in convicting traffic law violators instead of providing a check on state authority.

i've long to do a post about the "german village" that's about a mile from our home in wiltshire. the british army uses this as an urban training ground (and a few years ago, an "iraqi village" sprung up next to it. living in the middle of the salisbury plain training grounds, you get used to things like giant airplanes flying just above the house or tanks firing loudly only a mile away. but imagine my surprise to read on techmeme that we're about to be invaded by robotic scouts! well, the german village that is. news.com and new scientist have more about the compeion that's being held. and doesn't it figure -- we'll be gone by the time in august when it happens! well, i'll get out to the village as i've been meaning to for ages to shoot some pos before it happens. above, a close-up of the village (very out of date, not showing the iraqi village). below, our house in relation to the village.

today transcend japan unveiled a new 7-inch digital po frame [jp], which will hit japanese shores in the middle of may. the t.po 710c (219×28×156mm) will cost $170.

the frame accepts cf and sdhc/sd memory cards as well as memory sticks. the t.po 710c is equipped with a usb port and 1 gb of internal memory.

the tft screen has a resolution of 480×234. it can display jpeg, tmaps and features a slideshow function. the frame is also usable as a calendar, clock and alarm clock. motion jpeg, mp3, wma and wmv files are supported.

2 things stand out regarding the new po frame princeton technology [jp] unveiled today: the unusual shape and the low price. the ppf-ovo is designed like an egg (61×61×81mm, 158g) and will set you back only $38.

the device features a usb port and 2 gb of internal memory. its screen is just 1.5 inches wide (128×128 resolution) and can display jpeg and bmp files.

over the years, i've had a number of conversations with friends concerned about how disposable (and wasteful) technology has be. case in point -- the new printer i bought for less than the price of ink cartridges.

until last week, i had three printers -- a fairly modern hp all-in-one unit, a brother laser printer and my old hp all-in-one, a g95.

the first two we shipped, since we use them routinely, and they'll work in the us just fine. the g95 i figured we'd use until we moved for the odd print job or copying we might need.

unfortunately, i failed to check if the mac supported it. mac running leopard does not. oh, hp will lie to you and say that gutenprint makes it work. i bet no one from hp has actually tried it. i know that many report the same issue i had. it would send the print job out but nothing would back.

annoying. i couldn't believe i'd need to buy a new printer with weeks to go here. but, i did need to print something. so, i started checking prices.
